About Me

A woman standing on a large rock ledge in a canyon, with arms outstretched, wearing a yellow cap, sunglasses, a dark jacket, gray leggings, and hiking shoes, with vast canyon landscape and cloudy sky in the background.

I create intricate papercut artwork inspired by global papercutting traditions and the ecosystems that I explore.

I am a Los Angeles based artist and studied animation and studio art at UCLA and Yale. I worked in the animation industry for many years, on television commercials, special effects, and movie titles. During this time, I exhibited my watercolor paintings, incorporating animation sensibilities of the passage of time, movement, and metamorphosis as well as developing a discipline of doing precise, labor-intensive artwork. I taught animation at Santa Monica College and later got my Masters in Art Education and a Teaching Credential at CSULA. I taught drawing and painting to students from elementary to high school ages.

My love of traveling the world led to discovering that many cultures, from Europe to Asia and Mexico, have a heritage of papercutting. Laying down my paintbrush for a sharp craft blade, and now painting with colored papers, I create intricate papercuts that explore the hierarchy of nature and the layered complexities of life. I create bold color contrasts and lace-like patterns that highlight the balance between the fragility and strength of varied environments.

I have been an Artist in Residence in many National Parks, including Denali, Zion, Petrified Forest, Lassen Volcanic, Capitol Reef, Acadia, Redwoods, and Big Bend. My work has been exhibited internationally, including in Japan, Tasmania, Germany, Lithuania, and at the Shanghai International Paper Art Biennale.

Artist Statement

I honor unique ecosystems, including the diversity of flora and fauna, and the heritage of global papercutting with my colorful, handcut paper pieces. My work highlights the strength and fragility of paper contrasted with the strength and fragility of natural and urban environments.
